Universal Audio OX - Reactive Load and Speaker Emulator

Post by MattAnt »

Not sure if this has been talked about here yet. Anyone looked into this? Thinking about bringing one in unless Rockshop can do a decent price. Looks like a very cool bit of kit for using your amp silently/direct to FOH.

I've heard people raving about them on the groomed noodlers forum. How much will they cost to bring in?

Somewhere between $2100 - $2500 I think. Depends on if I can swing a discount coupon somewhere.

Yea reports have been very positive on the sound

It does a lot of extra things that I wouldn't require, but still a quality piece of kit

Looks like an attenuator with a headphone jack and a line out.

Maybe I'm missing something but I can run a slave out in my dual rec into a mixer or pa or desk or daw (with a di box) and use the amp volume for monitoring, and that's from 1997.

Wow you've really missed the point of the product, I won't even be using the attenuator.

It's a high quality reactive load that can realistically model the dynamic impedance of a guitar cab/speaker with proprietary speaker and mic modelling technology that is a little further advanced from standard impulse responses. On top of this it comes with a suite of Universal Audio effects which are renowned for being top in class. Add a few other features like being able to control the unit wirelessly with an iPad app and mix the mics and cabs, eq, effects etc, and its looking pretty awesome.

Best use cases of this would be to send a perfect signal to FOH without needing a cab (could do stage monitoring with a cab and then use the attenuator to keep in check) or for silent/consistent recording at home/studio.

It is akin to products like the Torpedo Studio or Torpedo Live, but reports are coming in that it sounds even better. UA do high end gear for studio and their effects and hardware are some of the best. This product is quite unusual for them but very cool.

If you are using the slave out with no IR then this is going to sound like garbage fyi, signal from guitar amps is designed to be coloured and filtered through a guitar speaker.

To anyone interested, Rockshop estimated pricing is $2299, subject to change when it lands (which I assume is in a month or so). Will probably pick one up local.

Pre ordered through rock shop, due here mid-late March. Similar price to the Torpedo Studio which is closest competitor.

Totally spendy though, so you have to have a need for what it offers, and want the best. There are things that can do similar for cheaper but I don’t want any compromise in sound.

If you have a number of amps and consider this a tool split between them, cost per amp not so bad.

Yeah, it's a tough one because I'm pretty close to exactly their target market. I do a lot of recording at home, have three amps that are too loud for that to be practical, and am a professional audio engineer so I have pretty high expectations of gear. I just wish it was about $1k less.

If it's for recording only, a good load box should be enough? You can always add IR's and FXs in the DAW.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A

Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.
