Any experience with Behringer power amps?

Post by griff »

I need to get a power amp to run my modeler through a guutar cab and the Behringers are going for good prices at the Rockshop. I know Behringer have a bad rap in some cases but have been told a few times the quality has improved vastly over the last few years.
So, with that, do their power amps perform well? Good headroom, sonic quality etc?

For the record, I don't know if its improved quite so much as always been hit and miss quality wise, you never know if its going to be a dud until you've put it through its paces, but luckily here the CGA will look after you regardless.

There aren't really any laws in place but many places do let you return stuff you don't like (but mainly stores more like the warehouse etc). Best thing to do is hit Dave from the rockshop up on here and as him what his policy is

I guess headroom is quite important too to pick up transients and other sounds. The higher the better.

My experience with Behringer is that its all non-innovative cloned designs, built as cheap as humanly possible, much like your TV or phone. They do what it says on the tin and will do it for cheap, and one day it will break, but who really cares as it was was cheap anyway.

The guitar shop I used to go to in the UK had one of the Behringer 5150 clones (Bugera 333?). It caught fire while on standby, luckily self-contained in their sound-proofed demo room, so nothing else was smoke damaged.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

A powerstation is more about taking the load of a big amp, reducing it down to a signal, and then re-amping it with the inbuilt amp at a lower volume.

Yeah I realize it does that but it's also known for it's transparency as a dedicated power amp.
If you know of a decent tube power amp that isn't a guitar head or combo that's cheaper than $1200 I'd love to know :)
