Closed back/open back cab design

Post by Reg18 »

Trying to figure out the best way to achieve a closed back that can be open back without having to use a screw driver. This is the best I have come up with so far but I'm pretty sure the Velcro at higher volumes will just blow out.
Any other suggestions?

3m dual lock should do it. I think mitre10 had it but I can't find it on their website.

I have a cab with a front mounted 15 inch black widow speaker, the grill is held on by four tiny squares of similar stuff.
The grill has never come off unless I levered it off.

Well your probably right, but I like to think I have the freedom to choose and therefore have some control over my own tone where most of the time the sound guy prefers closed because it doesn't bounce around the building! But I still hold out hope for my open back dreams to become a reality.

On a side note, would magnets interfere with the speaker at all?

I can confirm this is a great speaker combo with an AC30!
(Thanks Grant for the Blue) And against popular opinion on Blues, I think it sounds great as closed back as well as open back. Although that could change when I try it in some different locations.

In doing some research I think I've figured out why open back cabs don't sound very good in the venue I play at.
It's an open stage so there is no wall behind the amp which in reading up is crucial for an open back to sound nice a full. Which would also be the reason every time you try an amp at a music shop (most of the time a foot from the nearest wall) it sounds great and when you get it home it suddenly sounds like the weedy second cousin of the amp you heard in store.
I've also noticed Greg V demos on YouTube he always puts an open back combo in the corner of the room I assume you use as a sort of bass trap for accenting the low end.

But all this to say having an open back combo without a wall within a metre or 2 can sound a bit wimpy compared to a closed back.
Of course what other people's experiences have been could be completely different from mine and tone is subjective etc etc

the good thing with an open back though is you can fine tune the difference from the wall until its at its sweetest :)

I was always under the impression that closed back was essential for "metal chugginess" and sought the mesa cabs ect
My 2 DV Mark 1x12 open backs give more punch and thud than any ive had previous so that threw that theory out of the window
Plus i do have mine piggy backed and in the corner of the room :)

It does seem very dependant on room placement,
Comparing my own cab in the lounge, open back it sounds louder, has a little bit more bass and seems almost as tight sounding as closed back.
At church on the open stage with no wall within 10m from the back the difference is pretty significant. A lot Les bass than closed back, has a really nice open airy sound which is nice but always gets noise level complaints. Using the same cab closed it has a decent amount of bass but looses the open airy sound due to the closed back, never get complaints on noise level, in fact I can turn up a couple of notchs and still not get complaints.

However my reason for making the cab convertible was so I could change it on the fly depending on the room and what sounds best or what noise restrictions are in place.

I like closed back cabs, purely because you get the same sound regardless of placement, and I like that tight bottom end (ooooerrrrr).
