Which AC15?

Post by Slowy »

I know this subject's been done to death but help a brother out.
Of all the AC15 versions, which is the best and why? And should any be avoided?

Vox only; no Morgan, Matchless, JMI, Dr Z etc. Budget doesn't run to them.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

I've owned a few and certainly played pretty much all of the modern ones (still would love to try the Korg era version)
One of the best tones I've had was a Tele bridge pickup into an AC15H1TV on the EF86 side. That amp sounded thin at low volumes though and has no MV.
AC15 with the Wharfdales doesn't sound great, maybe it would if you got the version with the Alnico Blue. Haven't played that one with the Blue so not sure.
AC15C1, owned one...awesome! Slightly more body at low volumes probably due to Greenback speaker and more closed back design. Has shitty reverb but trem is good, MV works well, can be bought for $650-800 most weeks!
AC15HW, better MV, kinda miss the EF86 tone but a much better usable amp than the original HW version overall, although the AC15H1TV had some bliss spots at higher volumes but not always achievable at practical volumes.

Currently I own this, still happy and no real desire to go back to the 15.

Depends how you define best, I suppose. AC15C1 has on board reverb and tremolo, which might make it the complete amp for some. AC15HW, as noted, has a great master volume and generally sounds excellent (particularly with Celestion Blue. Oleg has my old one (unless he's sold it since) so you might be able to arrange to have a play with it (oo-er). It's be subtly improved with a few mods.

Ac15c1 or ac15hwx. Green for non handwired, blue for handwired.

The different circuits compliment the different speakers, but all of the current range are great.

If you're looking for an older one, the Ac15 TBX is an immensely good amp, as are the Heritage series. If possible, avoid the Custom Classics, aka CC1 and CC1X, reliability issues, and poor speakers let them down.

Yeah, that was my feeling too. AC15H1TV at decent volume is one of the raddest sounding amps I've played. I had one at a Corban's Geargest a few years ago.

I really like the hand wired with the half power option and the blue speaker, just wonderful and very versatile.

Quite happy with my AC15C1X

How are you going to A/B all of them?

Best bang for buck is the AC15C1 and you can replace the reverb pan for about $30 with only the aid of a screwdriver if you want a better reverb. Mojotone pan works very well.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Looking at the http://www.mojotone.com/amp-parts/Mojot ... rb-Tanks#/ website...

Which one can be fitted into the VOX? Which one did you use/recommend?

I had the AC15C1, did the reverb pan swap too, got mine from Ryan, didn't like it with the greenback in it so much, but put an eminence wizard (their G12H30) in it and it was awesome! Also swapped out all the toobs for JJ's and put a Tung Sol 12AX7 in V1 :)

If I was gonna get one again I would go for the handwired with a greeny and do the speaker change again, I found I never used the reverb or trem on the C1 which were part of the reason I went with the cheaper model in the beginning
