Help! What do you think of this amp?

What do you think? I've been thinking of getting something smaller than my JCM 900. I've been looking at Mesa combos, and I thought a Vox would be cool, but the chronic problem is that, well, the Rockshop sucks and has nothing I want (the Rockshop being the place which we should be able to go to get what we want). And NZ is small enough that no one local is ever going to sell what we want to buy.

JamesW, I'm thinking that if I buy this amp, I'll sell you mine and probably drive up to CHCH. Which will save a bit on courier.

Ok. I stopped agonizing over it and did it. Phillip, I see that you bought a Sansamp off him.

So. Does anyone want a JCM 900?

yes, it's two 6l6, I got a same sigle recto serie2 head version(with 3 but without reverb), it kicks ass, but you need to be patient about dail killer tone, but I call kill every one in my apartment with its huge sound.

Change of 6l6 to el34 could made this one way better for Trash Metal(think of Metallica's tone in their "Black" album, you can get same sound if you want!~~)

And with change the stock tube to 12ax7EH in V1 v2 v3, JJ's ecc83s in v4 v5, it will sounds much better than the stock tube!!!(Change it and you will love it)

Er. They both have 6L6's. I thought we were talking about my JCM 900.
Thanks DongHua, but I'm not really into thrash metal. Thanks for the preamp tube advice though - what difference does it make? What is the rationale behind it?

simply it is just make the amp sounds more Balanced over all, I'm not a good english speaker, so I could not tell you how it sounds like in very detail, but 12ax7EH is they way to go for less harsh, more balanced high gain amp sound, last very long. JJ a even more smooth, but littie lack in gain. However you can purchase EXCELLENT HAND SELECTED jj tube from "Eurotube" They got some very high gain JJ ecc83s,

And the stock pre-amp tube is Mesa's "Russian 2", which is sovteck(in Mesa's web site), But my friend works in Mesa Boogie Hollywood told me it's actually a Electric Harmonix 12ax7eh. So I try to compare them side by side, the 12ax7eh sounds better.

They won't made your amp sounds too much different, but they are more likely doing fine tune to the amp tone,, especially for gain setting.

Wow! Fantastic amp Congrats! I hope the sale goes well for you.

I've changed the preamp tubes in both the Mesa's I've owned. It can make quite a change to the character of the amp. For example, if you feel it has too much gain or is a little harsh, just replace the 1st gain stage on whatever channel you have issues with or swap out the PI with a 12at7 and hey presto. I've use a few mesa's and they have all taken well to preamp changes. A lot of mesa's are being shipped with chinese pre's these days

 But if this is what I'm like when I'm a student with no money, think of what I'll be like when I qualify. You remember the guy with the room where the walls are made of amplifiers, right? Uh huh.

I've been thinking I'd like to specialise in something really obscure and be the only doctor in the world who does that particular thing. Maybe the disease is GAS. Unfortunately I think I've got a terminal case.

You realise that to specialise in GAS you'd have to do psychiatry, and go into addictions :P (as opposed to specialising in gas - and the less said about that the better :? ).

A lot of docs seem to choose their specialty based on their own pathology, so GAS could be a good choice ;)
