One preamp tube completely transformed my Marshall ..

Post by Voxshall »

I was playing around with tubes in my mid 60's Vox and thought I'd try one of them in the V1 position of my early 70's Marshall superlead. This particular tube looked old but I can't tell what it was. I plugged a strat in and it instantly improved the tone 100%, my Les Paul always sounded great through it, but the strat felt constricted this little tube changed all that and now I can't stop playing it. Boy life is good when you find great tone out of the blue and it's even better when it doesn't cost a cent. Rant over

I recently won a trade me auction for 4 mullard ef86 tubes. Amazing only 10 bucks each. These are worth a fortune in the states..........

................back to the story.

Wereas before if there was nothing plugged into the input of my ef86 channel on the matchless an dthe volume was up you could hear a microphonic noise but with the mullard its dead quiet. Now thats pretty academic because i never have nothing plugged in there but its interesting.

Soundwise its hard to tell. It sounds good but then it did before.
