Help me choose between these amps

Post by Veraxitas Sales »

Line 6 Spyder II 30 or 112
Vox AD30VT
Roland Cube 30
Marshall MG30DFX
Crate GTX30
Crate GLX30
Behringer V Tone GMX210 Guitar Amplifier
Behringer V Tone GMX212

I am looking to spend $300 or less for a nice amp combo. It will be used primarily as a home/practice amp, but I do want enough power and sound to gig occasionally.

If there are amps not listed that you suggest please let me know. Thx!!

The Line6 Spider.

Don't buy anything smaller than a 12 inch speaker if you want to gig it.

For that sort of money I'd probably look at something like a Laney Tubefusion. Marshall Valvestates and Fender Performer amps would probably be in that price range 2nd hand and are an ok amp for what I think you want them for.

At music123.com they have 3 models under $300.

The Pathfinder 15 = $119
The AD15VT = $179
The AD30VT = $239

I recently went amp shopping with a budget of NZ $600 or so (I ended up spending $750, but that's beside the point - and it's what inevitably happens when GASing). Anyhoo ... it came down to two amps for me: a new Spyder II (75 watt model) or a 2nd hand Laney Tubefusion TF300 (120 watt). I would think that the lower watt models of each of those may well meet your price range. I would whole-heartedly recommend either. For me the Laney eventually won, but it was close - and the Spyder of course would win hands down in terms of number of (quickly and easily accessible) different sounds.

One thing about the Laney tubefusions to remember is that only the TF200 and above actually have a preamp tube. I haven't played any of the lower spec ones, so can't comment on the sound, but it's worth noting that just because it says "tubefusion" doesn't mean there's a tube in it ;) - particularly if a tube would be a drawcard for you.

As far as the low end modellers go, I like the vox stuff the best. The roland stuff is pretty good, to. Both would make solid beginner/practice/home recording amps. I personally think the cheaper l6 stuff sounds terrible, but in the end, your ears will be the best judge. trundle off to a shop and try a bunch of amps if you can, or order at a place with a good return policy
