LOL - me too - remember the early poiint to point wired ones - they had a hot copper rail just behind the front panel, so when you pulled it out, your fingers could roll over the lip and WHAMMO!!

Ok, so wrap a cloth around it, jank it out, stick a new one in (with it on standby) and if I am electrocuted, at least I died playing the guitar? Sorted. At least my student loan will be small.

Mate - its quite all right - honestly.
Glass is an excellent insulator.

FWIW - my credentials include registration as an electrician - I would never point anyone in the direction of electrical hazard.

Basically anything one-handed and you're pretty much as safe as you can be - just don't give anything live a return path - ie: do NOT hold on to the metal chassis at the same time - and don't stand barefoot in the drummers dribble...

I know something of which I speak - I have worked on 11,000V lines LIVE. I'm still here.

Of course what Rog did not tell you, Gregtar, is that sometimes, even with a hankie, the dead hot valve gets a bit of a thermic shock/stress and implodes - just one of his little jokes and I can tell you from experience you don't forget it!! Nice big leather welding-style glove is the best bet.

Suggest you can the number right then, turn off the amp, whip out the accoustic and ask the drummer to replace the valve while you do a solo number. Just ignore any screams/thuds behind you - drummers are such show-offs!
You can't do THAT on stage!

B45, sounds like something drummer Bluebottle would volunteer to do in a Goon Show skit
'yes my captain I will change the naughty little bottle for you.......................aaarghh it blew off my hand and left nasty bits of glass in my bottom.............thinks,must send a letter to Jim Marshall and tell him about faulty Japanese tubes in amplifiers'.
Doin' that scrapyard thing.

You rotten swines you!!

Even though I'm (a tad) younger than you ;) the Goons were a huge thing for me growing up. They were playing the recordings on the radio, and my Dad taped every week as well - so I ended up listening to all of them a million times 8)

They discharge themselves over time, right? but how long? days? weeks?
