Sadly I live in a semi detached and stand right over the top of the speakers, ther's no room in my music room any more because I have a full PA and a drum kit in there as well as the ac30 9 guitars, a 1x12 and a full stack.

Hard luck really, having to listen to creamy Celestion Blues at such close proximity...gutted.

ash, quite possible re. the 6v6 thing...I was meaning in general whether 6V6, EL34 whatever, that the EL84 and Strat tone are a good match. I think only the very first JTM's had 6V6 power section, and Jimi would definately been using the EL34 versions when he was famous. I have heard a 6V6 JTM and it is a sound to behold...what are those Blue Angel's like from Mesa...don't they have a 6V6 power option?

Actually here is a bit lifted from my Matchless amp manual.
MATCHLESS amplifiers are cathode biased and operate mostly in a Class “A” mode. This means that current flows continuously through the output tubes whether a signal is present or not. Most amplifier designs employ the more popular “AB” or “AB1” biasing technique, which although capable of producing more power for a given tube configuration and transformer size, produces crossover distortion and more odd order harmonics. This is why MATCHLESS amplifiers are described as having a smooth tone that won’t fatigue ears even at a high volume.
Now I accept its puffery but that last comment is interesting.

p.s. strictly speaking the amp is class a/b anyway.

Yes, that is interesting. The comment does have some basis in fact in that odd order harmonics are the significant component for transient responses like hard clipping and square wave signals. I could believe that they would be a little hard on the ears, but I've never seen anything to confirm the notion.
