Headphone suggestions for the amp-less army.

Post by Spykerwolf »

Currently using a Blackstar HT 60 as my main amp, but thinking about going digital and using some headphones. Monitors would be nice, but can't really justify spending $600~ at the moment. Is there a headphones standard out there? Something along the lines of SM57?

My setup would be. Guitar - Focusrite 2i2 - PC, so nothing complex.

Audio Technica ATH-M50

Cant go wrong. Once run in, these babies perform without hyping the signal.

Wot dayl said... I have two of these, the older ATH-M50 at work and the newer ATH-M50x at home. As far as I can tell the only difference is removable/interchangeable cords in the latter. Great value!

Heard good things about this one. Did you get yours from Amazon?

Looks great man, but trying to stay under $200! $150 is already pushing it.

I have a set of these, very good closed back type for the price. Got mine from Jansen.

You might want to try some open back as well, unless you need the isolation of closed back, general idea is they sound more 'realistic' than closed back... googlerise for more info

Why would you want an interchangeable / removable cord?
In case it breaks, or if you want a longer one?

I got my first one on ebay, and second one from Computer Lounge. At home I use a longer cord to reach my interface. On the rare occasion I take it travelling I use a shorter or coiled cord.

You see those strange people walking around town who appear to be having a conversation with nobody? They are the spies ya know ;)

OP: Monitors are well worth the money. Really good for monitoring your guitar going into DAW. Can even get feedback from them. I also like the flat response for listening to albums. I notice stuff I missed when using hi-fi speakers.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Found a ATH-M50X pair on trade me for $150.
It was wrongly listed as M50, but confirmed it's the M50X on the box and actual headphones.
Next on the list, toanz improving batteries for my pedalz :D

I spend a lot of time with headphones so I got the ath-m70x which is the big bro to the 50.

Apparently a flatter response and greater response range. But with my hearing I could easily have gone for the 50x. A whole 4gm lighter! I've never had fatigue from these.

I find the interchangeable cords pretty useful, short one for walking, longer one for studio, curly one for work etc.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.
