Jeremy- not this time... My wife is involved!
So, in your house, are you the only one who must sell something if you want something new?
I really don't have any complaints about how it all works in our house - and Sarah doesn't even read this site. :-)

She is super low maintenance so it's rare that she wants to buy anything. She budgets me a decent amount each week for gas and let's me spend our tax rebate on it too. I'm going to buck the trend and say I'm pretty happy with how my wife treats my gas.

I'm planning on recording plenty of wound up JCM800 too... So I think a 57 would make sense.

In all seriousness, if you are only going to have one mic to choose from....

It doesn't matter what it is.

As has been said so often, buy the best you can afford. any mic can give you a great recording. It is not until you have more than one mic in your box of tricks that mic choice, or which mic is best for the job even becomes an issue. If that.

A hanky or a piece of tissue can work wonders if you need to tame a mic. Not to mention, proximity, angle of attack or a heap of other things that can make a huge difference.

Or double your money and buy a good cascade ribbon mic. Now there's an all rounder. ;)

Studio guys... how does that mic there (Trion 7000) compare to a Fathead?

I prefer the Fathead, but that price is pretty damn good.

Beware of plosives with ribbon mics- you definitely need a decent pop shield for vocals. The kind you mount on a stand.

Pop shields. Every home should have one.

The cad mic is such a bargain it renders my double your money comment redundant.

A ribbon mic would work spectacularly well for acoustic guitar, vocals, drums and especially screaming JCM800s. The figure 8 polar pattern gives you versatility in spades.

The natural high frequency roll off character of most ribbons is a bonus in most instances. The big warm body (ooh err IB:JB) adds presence to the mid tones without nasty shrieky cuttiness. I reckon, without being too out there a suggestion, ribbons should be on the radar for any home recorderist.
