If you don't want to do the capital outlay for a spray system, there are Preval sprayers which are basically air canisters attached to a bottle, can be used to spray anything you want to mix up. They are expensive, from memory about $30-35 for one canister and bottle. I've also found they leave a fair amount of orange peel to remove (not my shit technique of course), but if you are only going to ever spray one instrument, they are pretty good. I've purchased from the spray store here in Christchurch.

You can get the Preval system at Super Cheap Auto for $20, I bought one a couple of months back. I found them equal to the aerosol cans, fairly large droplet size and tends to lay it on if you aren't careful.
I have gone back to my Badger airbrush, much more control and you can thin/lay very controlled coats. Just powered by cans of air as I am not doing a full refinish. The can of clear nitro I got from Grant is still going strong

Decades ago a model and cycle shop I used to work at sold an adapter that allowed Badger spray guns to run off a car tyre valve, making your garage your own personal source of compressors. I dunno if it's still a thing, but is a cheap, smooth air source if you can put up with the smell of car tyre and you're spraying a guitar or three rather than a car or a house.

I picked up an airbrush about a year or two or three ago from a Mitre10 shop, haven't used it yet. Also got a smaller 250ml touchup paint gun. So have a look in your local hardware shop.
I've been using aerosol cans instead (Nissan R33 project, spot repairs). I've been getting my stuff from here http://totalbodyshop.co.nz/index.php
If I was doing another guitar I'd be looking at going for modern paint technology... gots to keep moving forward

I started with one of those airbrush compressors, but quickly decided it was a waste of time, and picked up a small one from supercheap for about $120 I have a samll aliexpress gun, and a small single action airbrush, both work great for pedal painting. the airbrush set me back 50 or 60, the gun was about $20 a few dollars here and there on adaptors and stuff to get everything to play with everything else and I'm stoked. I got so frustrated with cans,having to throw out so much unused paint, and clogged tips etc.
