Lotsa little coils
Been winding coils to make a couple of pickups that suit my homemade Gretsch copy. Made a PCB for the neck pickup first.
I know you people don't like anything that ain't handwired but without a PCB this particular kind of pickup will be very messy.

Re: Lotsa little coils
For sure, but need to complete neck and bridge for my Gretsch copy first. Current dimensions are 72x33mm so quite small and will 'fit' into Gretsch 6120 pickup cavity.willow13 wrote:is my name on some of these ..... ... have some nice Alder logs with your name on

Re: Lotsa little coils
The real finnicky work is soldering the lead wires on the AWG43 wire and then wrapping it up in tape without damaging the coil and breaking the wire joint. No wonder Gretsch never made these type of pickups, despite Ray Butts having patented this design in the fifties....
The second photo shows the coils loose on the PCB, yet to be soldered on.
For now I have one of the earlier prototypes on my Gretsch copy and it sounds divine Hoping these will be better!

Re: Lotsa little coils
No Sir! What I said was that this was patented by Ray Butts (Gretsch). However, they decided to go for one large single coil for sound and one (smaller) coil for hum cancelling. Very much what every conventional humbucker manufacturer does.bbrunskill wrote:My word. Is this what is inside the gretsch filtertron pickups? very cool!
I thought I came up with something unique a few years ago only to find out that Gretsch had beaten me by about 50 years or so
But what I am making does sound different. Ask the guys who tried it at the gearfests...

Re: Lotsa little coils
Filtertrons are constructed very similarly to standard humbuckers- two coils (the same size) that are smaller than standard humbucker coils and closer together. They have a much lower DC resistance than humbuckers, but make up for that by having a gimungous magnet (at least twice the size of a standard humbuckers). At least, that's how the one I pulled apart was constructed.jvpp wrote:No Sir! What I said was that this was patented by Ray Butts (Gretsch). Re: Lotsa little coils
Been a while since I made a PCB... couple of tracks needed some help and extra solder...
That ammonium persulphate is quite aggressive
If the boards work out well I can always get some more made in Singapore or where ever you get them from these days.
