1967 fender Coronado refret
Getting back on the refret horse after some bums rides.
Decided to give this a shot.
1967 fender Coronado
I had some vintage spec wire laying about
Using my trusty modified bull nose pliers and soldering iron to remove, dremel to under cut the end of the tang and simple files

Re: 1967 fender Coronado refret
The rose wood is quite dry and brittle so I have been oiling it like crazy to prevent splintering with removal
I noticed the tang is minutely deeper on the fret wire I have so I'm having to carefully remove about half a millimeter with the dremel along the length of each fret prior to placement
I am experimenting with cyanoacrylate a drop at each end to help prevent lifting
The first fret I put in I decided to do no over hang. I have changed my mind now and will over hand all the rest. I will go back and replace that one at the end if I have enough wire.

Yes, ending the frets on the end of the binding is the way to go. Looks better, feels better.
Feel free to borrow my tool for filing the ends of the frets

When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Cool.
Did you remove all of the frets first to validate the level of the board at all?

I just wanted to do a few test frets up the neck to see if I had the right gear before I whipped them all out
Neck looks pretty true though.

Jealous! Haven't played a proper gig in 2 months, nor practise.
Check the neck for drop off at the first fret end...a somewhat typical Fender characteristic.

Re: 1967 fender Coronado refret
My newly acquired CS '66 Strat is in need of a refret. Might get away with a partial but what's the point in that? Just bite the bullet and do it all. Still, it's an expense I hadn't expected but you live and learn (I should know by now...). Anyway, it's a maple fretboard so I'm a little wary of taking it on myself. Not sure what's supposed to happen with the lacquer.
Really impressed when you blokes take-on this work yourselves.

Great - I have a maple board Tele neck under duress on the work bench trying to force it back into shape.

Re: 1967 fender Coronado refret
I've had two recent Gibsons on my workbench recently with this exact problem, both of which required re-leveling and re-radiusing of the board before a full refret.GrantB wrote:Jealous! Haven't played a proper gig in 2 months, nor practise.
