Re: New cab builds
Yeah sweet. Would involve me having everything precut and sent to you. You construct and add tolex and grill etc.l and send back. I'd be looking at Mesa specs probs.
What's your grille cloth supply like? That stuff on the Marshall cab is great!

Re: New cab builds
Hey I can do all, no need to get stuff precut I can flat pack it if you want or I'm sure we can get decent shipping - without speakers they're pretty light. Think the marshall was salt and pepper. Can get that.griff7628 wrote:Yeah sweet. Would involve me having everything precut and sent to you. You construct and add tolex and grill etc.l and send back. I'd be looking at Mesa specs probs.

Re: New cab builds
Ok a few updates, nearly finished a tweed job for Mike, blackface princeton - thought I had more photos, will take some tomorrow!
been trying pva glue, hence the clamps, but I'm not happy.
A mesa style 2x12 for a guy on facebook. 18mm plywood - this stuff chips too easily but finger jointed anyway. Working out ok though. The front frame is corner jointed with dado joints (ib:jb;). Baffle is in progress then back plate and bobs your uncle.
and finally a 1 x 12 for Ben's mate. This is my old amp cab repurposed. Pretty happy with the woodwork - has dovetailed corners and I've filled the control cavity etc. But this el cheapo tweed I was testing out is a pile of shite - I'll cover with the real stuff. I'm sure it would look ok but I'd rather it looked great!

That is now covered with real tweed. I may have to do the back panel with the less than good stuff though.

Phew, just as well your services will be available for another 27 years...
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Re: New cab builds
They're the best joints I've done, as Mike says - practice. Now if I can get them all to line up that is the bizness!Optical wrote:Is that stitched together? or just overlapping?
what's going on there? Looks great...

Currently using the Selleys waterbased contact adhesive, dries clear, doesn't smell etcCdog wrote:If u don’t mind me asking, what glue do you prefer to PVA?

Re: New cab builds
Out of curiosity and because I had pine and cream tolex, I wanted to see if I could build a cab in a weekend.
I got a bit bogged down saturday as I thought I might as well make some 5E3 templates to speed things up.
So I officially started building the actual cab at 3pm yesterday. All wood cut out and the main box glued and jointed by 5pm. Drying overnight.
Made some more templates this morning so lost an hour or so, but started about 10am.
Didn't take long for it to start taking shape. Dovetail jointed as I can do them quicker with the jig I have. And they're easier to square everything up with.
Tolex going on...
So where did I end up? Fully tolexed. Baffle made and covered. Would have finished at 6pm, apart from back plates but when rushing I made the baffle a bit too tight, so the grille cloth needs to come off so I can shave a couple of mm of the baffle
Saving the finished pics for when it is Incidentally this one will be up for sale - standard 5E3 sizes, 8 hole 12" speaker baffle.
So what did I learn?
I don't like 'normal' contact adhesive, it smells and it isn't good to apply. Water based everytime from now on.
Grille cloth is thicker than I think
Templates definitely speed the cutting process - trace round them, band saw the pine, template stuck to pine, rout around. Bobs your uncle.
Made a couple of box style templates to route the front fascias (narrow panels) which made that job way easier than doing by hand. And less prone to slippage with the router.
Oh and I'm knackered, what a stupid fucking idea that was!!!
