What about modding an existing amp instead?
I have a Mesa Nomad listed which has a clean channel which is Fender based. You could happily spend some time tweaking that into the various Fender circuits without a significant amount of work.

Nice amp... and sensible suggestion... but it's journey I'm after. Time for another build!

I'm thinking of splitting the purchase between different merchants to fly under that ~oppressive~ tax bracket and get the best of both worlds. Then there is Youshop! The endless possibilities excite!

I think webber do a split order thing, I assume most do, where you can order hardware, cab etc as separate items?

on the other hand, don't be a pansy and make your own cab and chassis :P

You can get Hammond transformers from Digikey or Mouser with free shipping, they make up a large part of the cost. Buy one at a time and they will come in under the GST threshold. A headshell might be tougher but also easy enough to DIY. Chassis can be whipped up locally. Faceplates and cosmetic guff is cheap enough to ship...

Made the cabs last time, so I'm off the hook there. Chassis? No thanks! :P

These guys are pretty good to deal with, I've bought a few transformers through them.
