Well this is embarrassing
I switched out the power tubes ( sylvanias ) and put in some jj s that I had laying around.
.... I'm sure I'd tried this....
90% fixed
Changed out the first pre amp tube (which was a rather old RCA ) replaced with a similarly rather old RCA.
100%
Success !

Not sure why this worked this time and not months ago. Maybe I never tried but thought I must have cos it was too obvious

Always nice when its an easy fix though.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

I thought I had fresh pre amp tubes but now that I think about it, I pulled these and put them in the vox to maximize the clean head room in that amp for gigging and put the old radio NOS RCA ones in the Princeton.
