Speaker Wiring Question

Post by AiRdAd »

Hey Guys,

I've got four Celestion 8 ohm speakers. 2x 'm' series and 2x 'h'series. I would like to put them into a quad. I wanted to wire them up so that I had the three following combinations:

1) 2x 'm' series
2) 2x 'h' series
3) 2x 'm' series and 2x 'h' series going at the same time

If I connect two 'm' series speakers in series to one plug, and the two 'h' series speakers in series to another plug - I can get options 1 and 2 with each lot of two speakers being at 8 ohms. To get option 3, if I put the two plugs into the back of my amp, would I run the amp on 16 ohms or 8 ohms?

Is that the best way to do it? If not, any thoughts on what the best way to do it is?

Thanks Danny

Was just looking at something similar yesterday for my 2x12,
Scroll to the bottom of this page and you will see the diagram "3 way speaker cabinet input"
I'm sure this could be used for a 4x12 with some mods.

The idea is to run each pair in series to get 16Ω. (8Ω + 8Ω series = 16Ω)

Then on the combination, you combine the two pair in parallel to get 8Ω

16Ω + 16Ω parallel = 8Ω

Two of the same value resistance in series will double.
Two of the same value resistance in parallel will halve.

Sure!

Pretend each combination is its own thing.

Series is pretty easy, it's like one daisy chain where you connect the "in" to the "out" the whole time, like a life cycle or some crap.

Image

So each pair will be wired in it's own nice little 16Ω eco system just like that. (8Ω + 8Ω series = 16Ω)

Now in the next image, pretend each one of your two little ecosystems is represented by a picture of a speaker – you're only going to have one "+" and one "-" coming off each pair.

That's how you do the switching wiring. The best thing here is that by using three jacks, you get the option to be mono or stereo or just one set.

Hopefully that's enough to get you on your way
