With Germanium trannies it's actually pretty easy to swap the polarity of the whole circuit so that it runs off standard 9v -ve centre without the need for a charge pump. I built one and it works perfectly and sounds great, I just don't use it live as it is a proper NOS exact build with no extra filtering or what have you so it's pretty damn noisy but great for that Gallagher or Brian May tone if you need it.

Any more stages than a treble booster has (like a fuzz face or similar) and you run into oscillation problems between stages so you can't do the whole circuit flip trick on those, so a charge pump is needed
