It’s called a “stinger”, like a bee’s bum. Gibson did it regularly through the 50’s and a bit through the 60’s. No reason usually. Custom order thing originally.

I remember midge marsden mentioning in NZ musician about a 335 he bought off a US sailor back in the day, it was his wish d never sold guitar. Could it be?

I read it was used to cover up imperfections in the wood. By the time the neck had been shaved down to its almost finished state, enough work had gone into it to necessitate some form of cover up if there was a 'flaw' in the wood. That's what I got from the tiny bit of research I did for the stinger in the Coronet you gave me anyways.....

jesus grant. What a great guitar, and good on you for assessing it accurately, I know you would have done a legit job and that would have been a big help to the both the owner and his mates so they could decide what to do with it. Glad it went to you.
