Awesome concept and gesture, agree about how cool it would be on a larger scale. Imagine if it was on a scale that extended beyond guitars, we might have stronger communities!

Looking forward to following this restoration :)

He he...I have a tidy Lollar P90 dog ear and custom wiring harness coming out of a '64 SG Jr. Would work well in this if you're wanting to change the electronics for better stuff.

Yes, that sounds awesome. PM me details on what's required to make this deal happen. I haven't done a lot on the guitar recently. It is ready for paint and I have solved the pick up cover height dilemma with the use of a Dremel and some very fine cutting blades. I'll put some photos up later on today.

Sorry for the long wait between drinks folks but today is SPRAY DAY! It's very calm and clear here in Christchurch and the guitar is ready to go.

The back of the headstock has already had 4 coats of clear to seal in the serial number. I'm aiming for 4 wash coats of black today (thats 50% Black nitro mixed with 50% lacquer thinners) at 2 hour intervals. More photos to come as the day progresses.

A very successful weekend of painting. I managed to get 5 layers of colour down on each day with a nice 2 hour gap between each of them. I've peeled back the masking tape to see if there's any runs underneath and it all looks good. The back of the headstock is going to be left natural so here's what it looks like right now;

Gibson used to sometimes do a reverse of this on some of their guitars, it's referred to as a 'stinger'. Apparently sometimes when the neck was fully carved there might be a blemish in the wood on the back of the headstock. Because they had come so far in the production and they didn't want to waste the neck they painted the same shape in black. I've done it so I can keep the serial number visible.
Next up, 1 week of curing then a light scuff sand to take off any small bits of grit in the finish and then its onto the clear coats.
