Hens Teeth and Rocking Horse Poo.

Post by Slowy »

For decades, I have known of an incredibly rare Gibson acoustic that is spoken of in hushed tones. It was briefly made in 1936/37 using German Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood.
It's tone and power are legendary; the only Gibson able to go head to head with the great Martins of the Pre War era. There's very few of them. Knopfler has one, some collector claims to have scooped up every one he could find in the '70s & 80s.

I've never found one in the wild until today:

Given that a Martin of that era would have a 1 in front of the price, it's a bit of a bargain.

Beautiful. That Pickguard is incredible.

Did you see the mint 1941 J-35 at Folkway Music a few months ago Slowie? Sold for somewhere in the $30k USD region.

They also had a Gibson 'Jumbo' as opposed to an advanced Jumbo, which was advertised at $36k.

Wonder why they didn't go the whole hog and ask for $56K.

Is it like selling $2 stuff for $1.99 for the psychological impact?
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.

Dimensions are different; it's a little bigger if I remember correctly. It pre dates the J series. It has Brazilian Rosewood back & sides which was a rare thing for Gibson to do.
Actually, I haven't geeked over these for ages so the details have gone fuzzy; never seen one apart from Knopfler's. And then, today, there it was and I'm $50k short.

The Jumbo is the same dimensions but Mahogany back & sides.

Ah yes! Do we know how many Advanced Jumbo's were made before the war? I don't have my Spann guide on me but can check tomorrow.

According to Google, 300.
Compared to a D28, they were not well made which has affected their survival rate. They were built very light which is probably the reason for both their responsiveness and volume and also their current rarity.

Considering the original is out of reach, a Fairbanks AJ model is a good substitute for much less.

Those Fairbanks look nice. What kind of coin are they?
Larrivee 00 Acoustic. FAV Strat for electric. Ibanez SDGR5 for bass. Push for Ableton. When not doing that, 3D CAD for tunnels...

They run $4.5k to around $6k USD.... I dream of a Fairbanks L-00 to go with my Kalamazoo KG14 but a Lotto win will be needed in order to fulfil that dream!

Here's a used Fairbanks Roy Smeck Radio Grande for $3.6k USD...
