SG from HECK

Post by GrantB »

I thought I'd start this thread to provide me with some obligation to finish this guitar.

It is an early '65 SG Standard. Wide nut, slim-ish neck, lotsa original parts, completely broken and poorly modded.

I set out to provide the guitar with some dignity rather than a mint condition restoration. The fact being, it would have taken an enormous amount of time to do the latter and one would have always seen the work.

For today I'll just start on some of the initial photos - caution, graphic material ahead.

On a project like this Grant, what would you do first? Would you set the neck etc first?

Pour a strong one.

Actually, smash the neck right off, poorly, like this.

After I smashed the neck off I started on the inversely delecate job of replacing part of the Gibson "o" that had gone missing during what was obviously an horrific headstock smash.

I cut the shape out of pearl with a jewelers saw, glued it in and sanded flat. Looks good now.

A serious response Danny - given the serious damage of the heel I started there, as the angle of the neck was going to determine a whole of other stuff. When I measured the scale it was out (originally) so I had to understand why and include a solution when I glued it back in.

To start off right I made a new tenon. Not as easy as it sounds - I had to route away the garbage fromt he break area deeply into the neck, perfectly square, and glue with epoxy to ensure it would survive nuclear war.

Phot of this process to come later.

If that's the SG from HECK, what does the SG from HELL look like? Does it come in matchstick form? ;)

Impressive attention to detail! :)

There are obviously some advantages to slow broadband.

In awe..as always.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
