Apart from being able to fit a bigger logo on, is there any actual point to having a larger headstock?

That was pretty much the reason for them. The black script shows up better on TV too.
I've always liked them. My formative guitar years were the early 90s. I liked 'vintage' guitars back then and had no money so big headstock Fenders were the closest I could afford to get to 'old'. Cheap then!
