So, the Rockshop cyber Monday deal makes that PRS purchase I've been dreaming of very tempting. Just wanting some advice from those who are more experienced with PRS than I am...

Is buying a higher end PRS without first playing it a risk, or are they all pretty consistent once you get into the $4-6000 range?

I have bought quite a few on-line from USA and been very pleased with all of them. From my experience a new "core" PRS should be flawless and if it isn't it has probably been adjusted etc once it left the factory. Good luck with the purchase!!

this ... although that does not mean you will like them. Every single one I have play has been top notch quality.....but I haven't "liked" any of them and I can't explain why

Possibly because nothing perfect is really interesting.

What's special about the 24 fretters?

I came to realise Pauls original design was the best. the 24 fretters sound better imo.
the 22 fretters contain all of the les desirable tones available from such a pretty instrument. I realised this when I heard a standard 24 against my old custom 22.

Ditto. I've had 24 US core PRSs, not a dud among them.

Nothing much - the neck pickup is a few millimetres closer to the bridge, making it slightly less bassy, as you'd expect. The 24 fretters also tend to be spec'ed with hotter pickups. Which is why I prefer the 22 fret models.

And, a bit like an SG, it might mess with your muscle memory.

I'm not buying the 24 sound better than 22 stuff by the way. IMHO that sounds like something you might read on a forum.

Had 2 USA models. A 97 custom 22 and a 2010 Tremonti. Could not fault either.
