You need to try both, some of the mexi stuff is a bit variable, as is the Chinese, find one you like and buy it :)

This has been answered already - if you care about resale, buy the mexican one. If you don’t, buy the squier.
Have had better luck with parts n shit on squiers than base model mex fenders.

I do care about resale as upgrades for me if trade in or resell and upgrade can only play and afford one guitar at a time which is why I don't want a cheap inferior guitar that will definitely need upgrading or repairing very quickly. I would like to try both but not really an option I think...haha we do have a Rockshop now in Gizzy. but a new Mexi vs an old one wouldn't be the same so I'll end up going with a fender over squier....just a matter of price the single coil pups that come standard with the mexi are the same as the US ones? or are aftermarket like the Tex ones an easy swap? no issues...cheers

They're both good in their own right. Steve Rothery has been my #1 influence since before I was a tennager (I turn 41 in a couple of weeks). I associate him mostly with the black Squier he's known for:

"It works. I have no snobbery as far as guitars are concerned. I can't see how a transfer on the head of the guitar can have any appreciable effect on how a guitar sounds or plays. My Japanese Squire is from the mid Eighties at a time when they were much more consistent in quality then most of the US Strats that were in circulation at that time (I have owned US Strats in the past). As I changed the tremolo unit to a Kahler and the pick ups to EMG SA's, it all comes down to whether it a good piece of wood or not."

My favourite go-to Strat is the second guitar I ever bought/owned and it's an early 90's Mexican Strat, I'd choose that one over pretty much any USA Strat. I guess some of it comes down to luck of the draw in finding a good one, just play as many as you can and hopefully you're lucky to find one that resonates with you. Just because it's from USA or Japan doesn't mean it's going to be great, and vice versa for a Squier or Mexican guitar.
