The 490R is a great pickup in my opinion. The 498T is also supposed to pretty good but I don't have much experience with it. I think the main issue people have is the they are often paired together by Gibson but don't really suit each other.

I had BB1 and 3 in my SG. I really liked them. I was not so fond of the Classic 57s. Nothing wrong with them though. I just had another blat on the Studio. I like both pickups. The 490r is very good in the neck. The 498t sound very good but if anything a little intense when switching to it. But nothing a intense as switching from a 59 to a JB. That was the thing then though. Hot in the bridge and pretty much PAF output or slightly more for the neck. Both of the pups sound good though. I am quite surprised at the dissing they get, but then again perhaps I should not be. People seem to like dissing stuff.

I am procrastinating on putting the Whole Lotta Humbucker set in the Studio. I am glad I did not do it straight away though. it gives me time to get to know the stock pups and what they can do.

p.s. that is me and Strats. I really like the tones others get from them, but i can not get on with them myself. Maybe I give up on them too fast and go back to my 24 3/4 comfort zone :D.

I think we all agree that a great sounding LP is called a Telecaster.

I haven’t read all the advice, but pots are a big part of making Gibson pickups sound good.

I was a bit anti-telecaster when they were so trendy on this forum. Why? Because they were trending on this forum. I never like what everybody else is getting into.

I played one i liked a while back. it had a quite aggressive sound. It was a pretty standard reissue one. No fancy stuff on it.

No-one was more anti-tele than me. I like their snarl. I hate their single coil hum. But I really love the neck pup.

My faded sg has three 490s in it, and I have no complaint.

Always sounded like Rock to me.

My go to is my faded studio. Unfinished wood feels good, comfy neck and chambered so lite and seems loud when played acoustically. It has natural relicing also, so I'm not precious about it like my standard.

I dont mind the 490's in it, albeit I'm not horribly fussy. Have thought about putting active EMG's in it at various times to make it more different than my standard, but kinda cant be bothered.

Try dual 85s if you can ever be arsed. I’d like to see how that goes.

Hmm better than 85/81 combo? I did read some like to flip that set so the 85 is in the bridge.
