NGD - AV64 Tele!

Post by sunburster »

Image

I got this recently. I love it! It's a 2012. It took me awhile to find a sunburst one (my favourite colour on these), but it was worth the wait. Looks great, plays great, sounds great. Best neck I've ever played on a tele. I think I finally found the right tele for me.

7-1/4” radius?

That’s what does it for me.

Yep, 7.25" radius, vintage-size frets. Just the way I like it.

Very similar specs to my new Jap Tele, very nice.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

I keep trying lots of guitars and keep coming back to my copper 52 reissue.

I've got a Mexi 60's style strat which has the same spec neck as the tele and that's lovely to play also....although I can't quite get into the strat sound.

Guess I'll always be a lowbrow tele man.

Love the brown tolex case.

Keep thinking I should move the tweed and get one of those.

It's a bit beat-up but works fine and the inside is clean. It's a really nice case. I like (and own) both tweed and tolex G&G cases, but prefer the latter.

I've owned three Japanese teles in the past. Fine instruments overall, but the necks on those were a bit too thin for me. The neck shape on the AV64 is quite different in feel from any of those (or any other recent American tele I've played). It's not too thick at the first frets but has a pronounced taper up to the 12th fret, where it becomes quite chunky. It's a great neck profile (for me) that is difficult to find outside of a 60s vintage example or custom shop. Plus the thin nitro finish is just the best.

I've just put brass saddles on mine but that is the only thing I feel that required a change. I prefer the look and fit of them, the intonation screws lay flatter due to the thicker saddles and the tone is just a little rounder.

I have some compensated brass saddles here as well, but I've kept it stock as I tend to do with American Vintage Reissues. Might swap them later to compare. But the intonation is spot-on with the stock saddles, which surprised me a bit as in my experience that is hard to achieve with 3-saddle bridges.

Which model is yours? I know Fender Japan have done many different Tele reissues over the years, from 50s to 70s.

Oh yes that is a beauty !
You are right about the squashed C necks on the Jap teles. Just not quite right.
That's a superb burst in that tele :). Mmm nitro
And yes , brown tolex , gold inside case is the way to.go !
Congrats

Very nice. I reckon this particular line of AVRIs are probably some of the best guitars Fender have ever made.
