Importer code? Bringing new guitar in
Ok this is not my first $1000+ guitar I've had sent to me from overseas - nor had to pay gst etc on. But I'm being told that for my one currently sitting in customs I need to have an importer code because it's over $1000.
Anyone else experienced this and have any useful comments?

Re: Importer code? Bringing new guitar in
Basically just have to fill out a form and wait for your importer code to come through. If you're a business you can establish a credit account via this code so that anything that comes through on your code gets cleared straight away and they just send you a bill, but that's not available for privates.
I think if you use a customs broker they can process the release for you, but that costs a money.

There seems to be no standardised procedure for this. I had to apply for my importer licence back in 92. Used it only 3 or 4 times in the years since. I used brokers on a couple of occasions but their charges added quite alot to the doorstep price. Paitents is a usefull thing when dealing with NZ Customs for sure.

I got one when I brought in a motorbike fourteen years ago. Must be attached to my name indefinitely as when I brought in a guitar last year they looked it up for me and used the same one.Kiwiaxe wrote:Ok this is not my first $1000+ guitar I've had sent to me from overseas - nor had to pay gst etc on. I had to get one when importing a camera a few years back. It was very easy and didn't cost anything.

Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Go here:
http://www.customs.govt.nz/news/utiliti ... codes.aspx
Fill out the form, include a scan of your NZ drivers licence, and email it to clientcodes@customs.govt.nz. I did that a few years back and got my client code emailed to me the next day.

Two minute exercise. Got code emailed back within 10 minutes. Collected new guitar today after paying left kidney for charges and now have to wait to get home to break it out

Customs don't check every single parcel. They are checked randomly so it mostly depends on luck.
However for DHL/Fedex/UPS etc they seem to actively declare everything for faster processing so you always get taxed.

Re: Importer code? Bringing new guitar in
I work importing goods. Any goods coming into NZ over $1000 are liable for customs clearance and payment of the GST. In saying that not all imports over $1000 are identified as so and some sneak through dependent on how they arrive into the country. Unless this is a regular thing for you use a customs broker who can clear it for you, they will require a commercial invoice and you will still need to pay them for the clearance through customs the GST amount on the goods. Having a customs client code just ensures a faster process, clearance fees and GST still payable.
