Friedman guitars, pinned neck=more sustain?

Post by Reg18 »

One of the more interesting videos I watched from Namm this year was the new Friedman guitars.
Everyone was blown away by the sustain and it seems a big part of it was the pinned neck.
Been wondering if this could be easily done to any bolt on neck?
Anyone done it?

Threaded inserts made a difference for me with my tele, much easier upgrade!

I guess it wouldn't be too hard for someone who knows what they're doing. The hard part would be making sure everything is aligned, with a normal bolt on neck you can loosen the bolts and get a little bit of adjustment but I guess the pinned neck everything will be pretty locked in place.

I have some of these in my tele too, makes it easier to travel with as I can easily unscrew the neck many times and pack the guitar in my suitcase.

Does it affect sustain? I suppose it could, a tiny amount. But the neck joint (especially if it uses a shim) effectively isolates the body and neck in most Fenders. That's not necessarily a bad thing...

If you really want the neck and body to resonate as one, I'd suggest a guitar with a tenon joint --and preferably a long one ;-)

The Malmsteen Strat has threaded inserts. Supposed to be more secure but there's nothing wrong with the standard system.

The main issue is wood is actually a crap material if you want a lot of sustain, it's great at dampening it, little things will make minor improvements, but I think looking at different materials is the way forward for the instrument!
