Genuine cool story bro!
If I was in the customers position, I probably would have fallen over when you mentioned it had been played and signed by the man himself.

The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Yup. All Gibbos are like that. It's to do with the size and shape of the milled cuts of wood.
To have a 1-piece headstock would require a LOT of wood wastage

It's a Gibson signature. Has been like that from day one of the les Paul. It allows them to use narrower blanks for the neck, and change the overal design of the headstock easily if need be.jeremyb wrote:Seriously??? Thats terrible, plenty of other manufacturers do it from one piece!
Check out the Melody Maker headstock which shows a one piece Gibson headstock.

Cost cutting measures do not impress me on such an expensive instrument*UNIQUE* wrote:It's a Gibson signature. Has been like that from day one of the les Paul. I've seen a number of those wings come off after 50 years or so.

Gibson aren't the only ones to do that though.jeremyb wrote:Cost cutting measures do not impress me on such an expensive instrument*UNIQUE* wrote:It's a Gibson signature. Also- quite apart from being a cost-saving thing- think about how much wasted wood there would be- probably a whole extra neck for every three that are made. Give me the glued-on wings any day of the week.

Great story, Matt! Your customer certainly got the best looking Les Paul I've ever laid eyes on.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

The headstocks are glued on anyway aren't they? no reason why they couldn't come from wider pieces of other wood!benderissimo wrote: Gibson aren't the only ones to do that though.
