Unfortunately, mate - I can't think in terms of 'best'. I can only think in terms of 'what suits me' & there is no way what suits me will surely suit someone else.
That said - for under $500, I like some of the Squiers and I played a Silvertone the other day which was OK, but I won't be buying it.
For under $1000, I think Epiphone have some nice choices, as do Squier. I played a cheap PRS and quite liked that too. I didn't like the Jackson.
I don't play/like acoustics, so am not qualified to give an opinion - although Ovation/Applause are definitely gay
Overall- there are some very instruments available these days for not a lot of money.
Although I haven't tried them, other than a quick blat in the shop - the new Behringer range of amps seems like a decent buy - very well priced and seem to be good bang for buck?

Electric Bass - Ibanez SRP400 under $1000, but not sure exactly how much.
Under $500
Acoustic - Ashton D65S - nice solid spruce top, some better than others or a DM55-CEQ for the cutaway electric option
Electric - Ibanez RX170 - some are really good. A set of nice pickups would push the value way up.

I have very little trust for anything Behringer. My friend bought a Behringer P/A mixing board because it was so inexpensive but a few months after the warranty was over it crapped out. No signal to the Mains Out jacks. He had it fixed at around half the cost of a new one. A year later channel one went dead. The repair estimate was more than the price of a new one so he bought a new one ($650) instead. Now he has two. The warranty is over in a month so I guess it was fortuitous that this one has blown the onboard FX circuitry now rather than later. At any rate, he has now spent more than the price of the Mackie he turned his nose up at due to price several years ago ($1600) and still doesn't have a fully working board. My Allen & Heath board ($1800) has 4 more chanels than either of his Behringers. They are all full chanels as well, no split chanels like his board(s). It cost a bit more than what he has now paid altogether but I have had mine for 4 years without a problem. I expect it to perform well for another 20 years in the same reliable fashion. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

The best acoustic I reckon for less than five hand shandy is the new Cort ranghe, much like the afore mentioned Ashton, with solid spruce tops and rediculously good finish.
$1000 you can almost buy one of the PRS Asian jobbies and they're pretty good. Strat style I think the Mexi's are still under the grand mark (are they?)...they're well made instruments although the poly finish is too thick.
Second hand is a different ball game of course...

I think you posted this in the wrong thread mate.
To any beginning guitarist, with around that much to spend, I'd recommend that they get second hand Mexican strat. From my experience, you can pick one up for around $500 - $600 which is about what it seems you will pay for a secone hand Epiphone, and the Strats are way higher quality. From the ones that I have played, the Epiphone's feel like a cheap guitar, but the Strat's do a fairly good approximation of an expensive guitar.

I should have know you would hi jack a thread
So Any one have an Ashton ? What are they like ?
Do we all tend to want a copy od a classic. ie. A SG, Les Paul, Strat when shopping in that under $1000 mark?
I have seen the odd Dan Electro (sp) in that bracket. I know the RS were selling that red doubleneck Dano for $699 a year ago. I was so temped to get it, But now I see it on Trademe for the same price.
Maton seems to be the best priced Acoustic under $1000.
Does anyone here own a sammick ?

I see Ashtons everyday at work. Many have been total crap in the past, but you get some real gems along the way. Low price means highly variable quality control which allows really good ones to sneak through too.
The general quality of Ashtons has lifted alot this year and the newest ones are rivalling Ibanez at a lower price. There are still some older ones filtering through though.
If you're looking at an acoustic of any price range, but particularly the $1000 mark you can't go past a Yamaha. Even the laminated top versions are fantastic. Yamaha may have no style, but they really know about craftsmanship and materials selection. Very very low failure rate too.
My advise on lower price guitars is to think twice about getting a classic rip off, especially LPs and others with binding, Floyd Roses and random fancy crap. Too much od the price pays for decoration, which doesn't leave much to pay for nice hardware, real wood and a good setup.

I contract to the Musicworks chain. I go into the warehouse each morning and setup nearly every Ashton, Ibanez and Yamaha before they get sent to the shops. Then the shop guys mess them up a bit and hang them on a hook out front
I also do all their warranty repairs.
I use their workshop space for my own stuff too.
Don't actually get as many Ashtons to fix as you might expect from a budget brand. Yamahas almost never go wrong.
