To Trem or Not to Trem

Post by ash »

So, do you like to have a tremolo equipped guitar as your frontline axe?

Personally, I have no love for tremolos, but I might be tempted to have one on hand. I'd want about 5 non-trem variants first though ;)

My favorite is the adjustable stop tailpeice, like the newer PRS version and the Ibanez SC420's bridge.

Choose which is your first choice...

NO I hate Trems, If you want to re-tune you've got to arse around with them. I've had one trrem equiped guitar and I just locked it.

I have my Trem locked on my Strat, but ready to go on my Dano.

I have no need for one with the music I play.

it's funny, i've never liked the PRS with the all in one bridge/tailpiece. So i've bought the ones with a trem, but i end up getting that locked anyway..

never bothered locking mine in the Strat. I like to play with it now and again, especially for Floyd stuff - Gilmour is the master of vibrato!

Mine never goes out of tune and it was blocked when I bought the strat - I percieved no difference in sustain when I brought it back into service.

I've also shortened mine so its easier to hold when playing, I'm using 3 springs and have a graphite nut and graphtec saddles - I could swing on the bugger all day and probably would need to tune up once. A liberal smear of vaseline on all moving parts helps too... ooerr missus...
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

There is only one guitar with a trem I will ever consider buying the ESP KH-603. Not just because it's Kirk Hammets guitar. Because I played it in the Rockshop and it's the only trem loaded guitar I've ever liked straght off the bat.

They should sue them for desecrating the LP style with a locking trem and a bolt-on neck!! ;)

Floyd-style, I guess. Specifically I love the ZR bridge on the Obanez s-series (of course I do ;) ), which has basically the newest incarnation of the "trem-setter" idea, so it doesn't go out of tune. Even if you break one of the top 3 strings, it's close enough to in tune that you can keep on playing for a little bit (say, to finish the song) and it doesn't sound awful. Tuning is easy - not that I've actually found normal floating Floyds all that difficult to tune anyway, and double-stop/unison bends stay in tune.

Basically a super-Floyd though, so that's the option I chose.

I used to block up my Strat but I recently set it free and low and behold, it stays in tune even when I use it. With a little bit of Tremeolo and a whole lot of reverb cranked up on my Silver Face Vibrolux Reverb, the neck pup on my Strat is perfect for emulating that haunting Gretsch hollow body thang that Chris Isaac does so well. I also have noticed no loss of sustain.
