see through guitars

Post by Rog »

I see that transparent guitars are making a mini-comeback, if C4 is anything to go by.

Nothing wrong with that, imo, I think they can look cool.

My question is - has anyone made such a beast with a see-through neck as well?

Now if that could be done and we added in some disco LEDs, it'd be on my 'I want one" list....

I have been watching Dan Armstrong guitars in ebay for over a year. They peaked when Dave Grohl was using them in video's and live. I dont think he is now. They went from $US1500 up to $US2500. Now settled back to between $US1500 and $US2000.
There are a lot of good and not so good copies and reissues out there.

This is a real bad copy

I can see from your other listings that you seem to be a dealer. You also make claims that its a real AMPEG. That it has had a pickup added etc etc. You are implying you have knowledge about it. You have a responsibility to correctly represent the guitar, which lets face it, is not cheap. There is a real and copy on Ebay at the moment, take a look. And sorry, but your representations on this guitar are b/s. Don't hide behind what the owner told you. Someone could have got sucked in

Didn't Dan Armstrong die a couple of weeks ago?

Might push the prices up for awhile..
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

When I was unfortunate enough to see Limp Bizkit at the BDO. Said Bass player had LED's in the fret dots on his bass. I've seen afew others with them in the neck like that. But none throughout the whole body.

Apparantly they sound like samick, theyre pretty much just used for show. I seriously doubt that people actually record with them. However when your playing it through expensive Mesas in a live situation they probably sound alright.

The only thing that has in common with a Dan Armstrong is the plexiglass body.

From the top
Headstock - Neck - Pickguard - Pickups - Bridge - Wiring - is nothing like a Dan Armstrong.

I remember seeing Mason Williams doing 'Classical Gass' on a clear, see-through, classical guitar in the mid 80's on TV - pretty good sounding instrument as well assuming it was not miming - cannot remember what show though.

Re the 'see through' Dan Armstrong; there was at least one Ibanez clone imported into NZ in the late 70's early 80's - saw it in Christchurch back then.
You can't do THAT on stage!

Kingsley Smith Music in Auckland used to have two plexiglass guitars. They were both the same, but one was branded Aria and the other was something else. They were pretty horrible and he never sold them the 10 years I visited there.

The Dan Armstrongs did get used. Keef used one in the late 70's with the Stones. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters used one in the video of "All my life" and actually used it live at Big Day Out 2003.
If you read the harmony central reviews they arent all that good. I would assume Grohls was much modified by his tech.

Poor ole Keef has used just about everything under the sun,and still only sounds any good with a 5 string Tele.
Hey by the by,I read that the riff for Honky Tonk Woman was a Ry Cooder thing and dear ole Keef decided it woz is. Folklore(muso goss) has it that the two av not spoken since.
Ry seems like a nice sort of boy!!
