I bought my LP copy, in my guitar playing infancy. Only now do I realise don't buy something just cause you have some money to spend. Every five minutes or so one of the conections comes loose and it cuts the output in half. So I go from 11 to 5. Then back to 10, so on and so on. Should I waste money on getting it fixed or do it myself. I do have a bit of a nack for electronics but know formal training.

Can only be a faulty pot or broken solder mate. Even I with my three thumbs as BG will tell you I could fix that.

Put it apart and have ago ?

i had a simialr problem with my epi lp a few years ago. if memory serves it was just that little strip of metal inside the plug bent a bit far out (the one that clips onto the jack). wouldnt hurt none to have a look inside it anyway

I've openned it up in the past. Some of the most shoddy looking wiring I've ever seen. Looks like a monkey did it or something.

Righto - suggestions - open ye wiring cavity!!! (axe/chainsaw will do the job nicely but nancy screwdrivers can suffice if you are worried about the finish)

1) look for breaks in wiring, resolder any obvious ones.

2) resolder all joints CAREFULLY ! - one simian job is enough.

3) replace output jack socket (you can get nice new shiny ones at Dick Smith).

4) Still cutting out??? - clean and/or re-place toggle switch (normally cleaning is enough)

5) Still playing games?? - replace all pots (Dicko Smith again - 4 x log 250k's should do the trick and don't forget to replace the caps etc in the right place althoiugh their polarity does not matter)

6) Still not right?? - techie time!!

Normally 1-3 is all you need with perhaps 4 for the Epiphones. On Teles the output jack packs up regularly and on the cheap tele knockoffs the pup switch goes awol as well.

OOOOPs before doing any of the above - try several different amp cords FIRST as the fault can easily be in them!!!

phew.... your programming stinks Rog - never ever use a goto near me again. And we stopped using line numbers 30 years ago :p

LOL - I know - I grew up on spaghetti BASIC - think ZX-80, TRS80 and Atari - when I started studying and had to do structured language it nearly caused a mental meltdown!! I loved goto & gosub statements - LOL

Fortunately, I've managed to banish all that COBOL, PASCAL, FORTRAN & HPL (there were a couple of others, but I've lost the memory of them) samick from my memory banks forever, counting myself lucky that's its all turned out to be geek stuff with no application in any real world!

BTW - when I started on PASCAL at uni, it was still with punch cards!!

I also used to work on a TRW mainframe, with a 1Mb platter which was about the size of a large plastic rubbish bin lid!!

Very interesting to me to see how far things have progressed in 25 years, yet a modern PC still takes about 10 times as long to boot as an old XT...

Yeah right on Rog - I still run a 386 DX33 in my study for writing the academic junk with, using Windows 3.1 and Word 2, as it starts up just about immediately.

In comparison this thing takes about 5 mins to startup and is always slow due to downloading the latest anti virus junk from Nortons once you go online.

Somewhere up in the roof storage is our URcomputer - a ZX81 with Ikb memory - saw someone trying to sell one on trademe yesterday for $100 so could be onto a real winner there!!
