HNGD x 3
Three guitars arrived this week. Two from Troy (the EJ Strat and the John Page), and a CS 1960 matching headstock relic Strat. Been watching Mike Eldred demo this Strat for a couple of years. Always liked the sound of it:
Anyway, when it landed today it was in need of a bloody good service. Felt and looked like it hadn't been played in years. I oiled the board, removed the tuners (which were as stiff as hell) and squirted motorcycle chain lube through a straw into the wee lube hole on the back of each tuner. This stuff is ideal as it'll squirt in and flood the tuner but set like grease. Did that and also a bit on the ferrules. Nice and smooth now. Masked-off the board and gave the jumbo frets a bloody good polish.
Took the trem apart and sanded the paint off the block (because Eric Johnson said so...). Reassembled it all nice and tight.
Took the pickguard off and lubed / cleaned the pots / switch. Doesn't look to have ever been messed with. Gave it a bit of a polish and reassembled. It's got that, I think it's called, 'Fullerton Curve' which I love. Will do a bit more tweaking tonight but just letting it settle-down.
You can't tell from the pics but the finish has a lot of checking and looks really good. Same on the headstock.
So here they are. The EJ has also had a quick going through. Nice contours on that one too. Haven't done anything with the Page yet.

Possibly. Think it was Oleg's too before it went to Troy.codedog wrote:That's a droolworthy haul! Is that the Page ex-StratMatt originally?

Bloody nora, those frets look lovely. What did you use to polish them? (My strat probably needs the same)
No one ever died of hard work.. but why take the risk..

Good job there mate. Technical and satisfying. Path to follow perhaps? Maybe transferable to furniture and so forth?

I still have my mops etc from when I used to polish motorbike parts. I should get another motor at some point and set it up again.Bg wrote:If I'm in my tiny office I do the same, else I go to the workshop with the big buffing wheel - really whoops it up quick same end result but quickerMolly wrote:My Dremel with a polishing wheel (I have the flexible extension because it makes life easier) and Autosol.chur wrote:Bloody nora, those frets look lovely. Wow, just lovely. Still my favourite guitar.
What’s the collective noun for Strats?
A quack? A riff?

The E strings are very close to the edge of the board in that photo.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
