I remember renting his instructional years ago.
I was sitting there in front of my VHS player eager for the first exercise..
He talked a little at the start and says "I'm not a fast player"..
Right.
Then he plays this descending phyrigian lick at a thousand beats per min. Then says, "and now to slow it down.."
Plays it again at about 700 beats per min.
I ejected the tape and went back to practicing Smoke On The Water.

Lol that’s pretty much how I felt too. Hired video of his and also one of Petrucci from library once to see what they were about - haven’t bothered since. Just failed to pique my interest.
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

He said in an interview that during all his teenage years from morning to night he practiced guitar.

Jason Becker said in his film that he did the same.

Paul Gilbert said in a YouTube series that he did the same.

That's how you get technically really good, no question.

So in short we all spent our teenage years practicing wanking. Some folks just did it on a guitar...

I just experienced the weirdness of reading through a thread, not realising it's an old one, and then seeing one of my comments on it.

I remember reading guys like EVH were the same, just grab some beer and practise all weekend instead of going out.

Can't stand the pompous prick.
He can take his scalloped neck and reel it back into his weeble wobble body.

You know one thing I've noticed about Ying Way or Ing Vee or whatever it's pronounced is that he's the only Scandinavian I've ever seen that's not hot AF and has curly hair. No wonder he played guitar to the point of no one giving a fuck.

I worshipped the guy when I was 15 and first discovered him. His first 3 albums are incredible but I think his accident screwed him up in many ways.
