Who the fuck is Ryan Adams?

Post by kdawg2a »

Summer of 69 jokes aside, (pains me, I came up with them first) I'm very interested in this guy. I first became aware of him in the mid 2000s with his cover of Black Flags, 'Nervous breakdown' on the Rise Above covers album. He's done all sorts of good stuff since and his current single 'will you still love me' hits all the right notes. His (and his bands) tone is spot on and he's got a great hair do.
Tell me team, what albums or songs should I check out? I know he covered 1989 and it''s not bad. I get the Pussy Galore-Exile on Main Street thing. Suggestions if you please. I've been checking out a whole bunch of his recent live stuff on you tube. What ya'll got?

Well there's a bunch of great albums.... I regularly spin these ones:

Heartbreaker
Ashes and Fire
Easy Tiger
Ryan Adams

Saw him in Wellington in 2015 and it was one of the top 5 shows I'd ever attended.

Also, for variation, try...

Love is Hell
Rock n Roll

He's coming again soon with yet another backing band. No doubt they will be awesome.

Plenty of youtube clips with his full concerts.

Gold and Heartbreaker are the foundation albums. From there the above other options are great extensions. Phenomenal live, almost zero difference vocally from albums.

Its funny, I heard his latest single on the radio and thought 'This guy is gonna be big'. I had absolutely no idea he already was.

Ashes and Fire

And am a fan of every other album to some extent.

We used to cover "So Alive" and I fricken loved playing it. That octave sus4 riff. SiHirst nailed the vox.

We cover when the summer ends off 1984 and This is it off Rock n Roll, and they'd be among my favourite covers. So Alive is a great song too, that whole album is class when you consider it is largely a pisstake/nose thumb at his record label...

Second Love is Hell.
Grant introduced me and it immediately became a top 10 favourite.
Also have Cardinology but we haven't clicked.

That album has it's moments, sure it's not his best work but I wouldn't dismiss it entirely. His version of "Style" where he channels the smiths and makes the subtle Sonic Youth reference is great, then again I'm probably on my own here...

I sort of get the feeling he's the 2000s version of Tom petty. Great song writing, killer tone, riding just under the radar but popular enough that you recognize his stuff. I stand by the 1989-excile on main st comparison. Thanks for the info chaps. I'll be divesting more during the next couple of days. More info of course would be much appreciated!

Nope, I hear ya...I love the album and it's quirks. Wildest Dreams intro and outro is great...and the new melody in Bad Blood courtesy of a Jazzmaster. I think it's a good album. People struggle with its origins and motivation I think.
