Mark, if you want some old flats that certainly do have some thump and beggar all twang, I think I have a couple of used sets lying around I could send you to see if that'll do what you need.

You must have posted this on the wrong Forum. This is NZG.thehenderson wrote:Thanks again guys, all very helpful
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Thanks Rog for sending those flats. UNfortunately one of them broke when I was first putting them on this beatle bass I've borrowed. A very sad time.
Has anyone here played one of these? They've reissued them recently, it's called a Hofner President. What are people's experience playing big hollowbody basses?

Well, it will look awesome. But when you guys do your blast beat breakdowns, it might squeal. How do Rickenbackers sit within your taste threshold?

Too pricey for me at the moment I'm afraid, I like them though they're cool. They even come with mutes built in

Re: Beatles violin basses and similar?
Hi
I have to admit I have always had a thing for hofners, bit of a beatles freak as a teenager.
I did have one of the epiphone copies for a while, if you can find one of those they are probably one of the better copies.
As far as the new hofners go, id save your money, they are over priced for sure.
I was lucky enough to find a german made hofner not long ago onlline in japan of all places. Only thing os some doofus had brush painted the whole thing with thick black enamel!! And it was in parts. But I bought it all the same as it looked like all the parts (bar the pickguard were there) payed about 300 US
Anyway after a few days painstakingly heat gunning back paint and scraping and a little bit of wiring I had a very usable bass. My own Hofner 500/1
As far as the sound, magic! I love it. I do have to say, though im a finger player, to get that thumpy Mcartney sound, you need to mute with the heel of your hand and use a pick.
Loaning it to my friend next week for some recording.
I ll see if I can work out how to add a pic
Cheers

Very cool! If you want to post bigger pictures, you can upload them to an image hosting site (like flickr or photobucket) and use the [IMG] tags to embed them in your post.

Looks awesome!
I've got a 64 Hofner 500/1 that I gig with quite happily. Nice big thump sound. Quite underrated basses I reckon.
Here's mine.

Re: Beatles violin basses and similar?
Oh very nice, yes 64 with the small pickup surrounds. Nice darker vintage stain too. My bass was baaaaaadly abused by someone. But shes back and operational.
I love the sound, infact just had a little whirl on mine along to some of the lines on the revolver album.
I like short scale, and the thin necks, they just play themselves.
Crazy switch board set up though...had a bit of a nightmare trying to put that back together.

Re: Beatles violin basses and similar?
Nice guys! I borrowed a beatle bass to record the last album my band did, but ended up going with a different muted 60s bass because it suited a little more. The new songs my band are doing would suit the beatle bass much more though, might get hold of it again and see what's up.
