Cold Chisel - Flame Trees

Post by foal30 »

here is another set of chords from some dreadful song of the 80's

this is from the 1991 Warners compilation album called Chisel
I do not know what album this tune is originally from.
I like the lyric, it's sort of sad

I think the tune is in the key of E major, I do not have a theory based answer to the bridge section and to me at least it strikes as a little incongruous. as with Maxine I reckon go the Fretless Bass for the win :)

A / E / A / E / A / E / A / E / A / B7 / G# minor / A / A / B / E / E/
this is the verse, they play verse 1 and 2 back to back.

the chorus is;
A / B7 / F#minor / F# minor/ A / B7 / E / E / A / B7/ C# minor / E / A / B / E / E /

chorus 2 and 3 are played back to back

the interlude + bridge is:
A / E / A / E / A / G# minor / B7 / C / G / C / G / D / E /

have a go. Both A major and E major pentatonic and also maybe some slurred/lazy F# blues for soloing.

Great song. I've got an "authorised" chord chart around somewhere for this (and a couple of other Chisel classics), must dig it out. Ian Moss is the man.

FLAME TREES by Cold Chisel

An old Aussie favourite by ex-mega band Cold Chisel. No big surprises
here, just a great tune. Enjoy.

David Braue via mf311960@uq.oz.au

Intro: A E A E

A E
The kids are driving and Saturday afternoon just passed me by
A E
I'm just savouring familiar sights
A E
We shared some history, this town and I
A B G#m Av
And I can't stop that long-forgotten feeling of her
A B E
In time to book a room and stay tonight

Number 1 is to find some friends and say "you're doing well --
After all this time you boys look just the same"
Number 2 is the Happy Hour at one of two hotels
And settle in to play "Do you remember so-and-so"
Number 3 is never say her name

CHORUS:
           A B F#m
And oh the flame trees'll blind a weary driver
            Av B E
And there's nothing that can set fire to this town
             A B C#m E
There's no change, there's no pace, everything within its place,
               A B E
Just makes it harder to believe that she won't be around

A E
Oh, who needs that sentimental bullshit anyway
A E
It takes more than just a memory to make me cry
A E
And I'm happy just to sit here at a table with old friends
A E
And see which one of us can tell the biggest lies
A E
And there's a girl, she's fallin' in love near where the pianola stands
A E
With a young local factory auto worker -- just holdin' hands
          A G#m B
And I'm wondering if he'll go or if he'll stay
C G C G D E
Do you remember, nothing stopped us on the field in our day

CHORUS

Here you go, though Rocky's posts pretty much cover it chord and lyric wise. PDF scan with chords, melody line, bass and lyrics. Flame Trees PDF. It's got Forever Now in there too as I got carried away with scanning.

thanks for sharing Alf

that bridge is just written as a key change from A major down a tone to G major
see no B7 listed = foal wrong and/or what the bass player does is not = what the chord is called.
the key is written as A major and I thought it was E major

yes Rocky that bit you highlighted is the bridge, I was looking for some thoughts on this.
