Gibson Quick Connect Wiring Colours

Post by sizzlingbadger »

I was wiring in a set of Seymour Duncan humbuckers into a Gibson SG that has the quick connectors today and discovered something interesting. I noticed the that colour of the wires in the little Molex plug on the original Gibson 490's were different for the Neck and Bridge pickups. My first thoughts were that the pins on the PCB board may have been wired to different connections in the circuit just to keep the PCB design simple. I thought there was no way that Gibson would be so fucking stupid as to change the colour codes of the actual wires on the pickups

Well they did change the pickup wire colours, so if you get hold of a Gibson bridge pickup that was supplied with the little Molex connectors the colour of the wires are different. If the plug has been cut off then you may not realise they are different which would confuse the hell out of anyone trying to wire it up using the the traditional Gibson wire colours. The neck pickups are unchanged as far as I can see.

Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

The most annoying thing about all this pissing about and re-wiring is I think I prefer the 490's to the WLH's :crybaby:

I guess Gibson aren't expecting their pickups to be reused in another guitar so whos going to be cutting the plugs off. Isn't the whole thing supposed to be replacing the factory pickups

Maybe, but why complicate your pickup manufacturing by changing colour codes ? Waste of money unless you trying to be particularly obtuse to customers, which seem to be the case. Epiphone quick connect for example is not compatible either.

Just solder the wires to the pots like normal.

Maybe pull the plugs out.
