What to do with this tele!?!?!

Post by AiRdAd »

Hi Guys,

I've got this tele baritone guitar. It's made by Adrian as part of his radian range. I don't really use it enough as a baritone, so want to change it up a bit.

I've got a set of Lollar Widerange pickups with chrome covers that I would like to put in a guitar, and thought about putting them into this one, instead of the humbuckers.

Trouble is, if I do that, I have to route out the humbucker routes to fit the wide wide ones. That would mean that I've got to put a pickguard on, and change the position of the switch etc. The only shape that I'd be able to use would be the one I've posted here, as it covers all the routing.

The body is really nice sounding, so I want to take advantage of that. I could turn it into a shredder, but the brown colour doesn't really lend itself to that look.

Normally I chop and change guitar parts etc, but with this one I can't as the neck pocket is narrow, so I'll have decide on a neck and stick to it, as I'll have to get it shaved down a bit. I'll also have to route the pickup cavities.

I've got a nice charvel neck that i could use, or a maple allparts strat one with a big headstock. I've also got the tele neck that looks like kwila, but isn't - but that is the same dark brown as the body all over (including the headstock, as it's one piece.)

Before I go down this track, I thought I'd ask you guys for your opinions, and for possible alternatives?

..so fire away!!

Don't route it. There are these if you really want to get wide ranges in it.

I would honestly put p90s or other low output jobbies in it for clarity in the range the baritone works.

ThanksSingle Coil - Part of the reason I'm doing this is that I'm really wanting to get the lollars into something. If I don't put them into this, I'm not sure what else I could put them into. Also - I'm not going to keep it a baritone :-) It'll just be the standard scale neck.

Seems kind of a shame to change it so drastically. All that would be left is the body? What about selling it and sourcing another body to route to fit?

I agree with what you're saying, but the body is really nice sounding, and I suppose I'm trying to find a use for it. The alternative would be to turn it into a double humbucker Bolt on neck guitar and I've kind of already got that covered.

It would be a crying shame to do all that drastic work to it :( it is a baritone and should be allowed to live out its life that way.

The pickup and bridge spacing are designed and positioned for that scale neck so if you put on another neck it will never intonate.

If i had any money id offer to buy it back for what i sold it to you for!! Lol it was afterall a $2.5k guitar when Adrian made it for me :(

Craig's right Danny. Sorry I don't have the cash for it but it's a custom built, specialist guitar. It needs to be what it is in the hands of someone who will use it for what it is.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Are you sure that the scale length can be changed JUST by replacing the neck? On some baries, the bridge is moved back a little as well, to get the longer scale length.

Cool guitar, though I can appreciate the conundrum.

Thanks Guys, the neck will intonate perfectly on the body, I've checked the size and it matches up Just right.

If I do the work to it I can still put the baritone neck back on and have it as a baritone again.

It's just the fact that I'm trying to put the wide range humbuckers into into it that is causing the issue isn't it.

I could keep the pickup configuration like it is, and shave a standard neck to fit in the neck pocket.

One thing id like to change is the colour. If I do a nitro respray, would that still be ok?

I'd sell it and buy a normal Tele.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

THat's what I though too - but I've sat the neck next to it and its perfect scale - I'd just have to re adjust the saddles.

I agree with what you're saying - but the body is really nice, and I don't really want to let go of it. Plus all of the hardwear on it is top notch. :-)

I've done heaps of partscasters, and if you can get the combination right - you can end up with a SUPER guitar. Ash has done a wonderful job with this one.

The only thing I'm not sold on is the colour. I've painted with nitro before (Chris did the painting - I did the finishing) and got perfect results. This would be an easy one to repaint because it is already in nitro. All I'd have to do is prep the surface and do the topcoats - I wouldn't have to muck around with all of the sealers etc.
