Return of the ric

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

Well, I'm happy to say my late 80s ric 330 is back after it's much needed re-fret
Thanks Grant for a SPECTACULAR job with this. The fret board lacquer I would not have liked to attempted myself. This finger board looks fantastic and hasn't justnthe right amount of varnish to give it that clacky ric feel.
Apparently it was so well played that there was sufficient wear on the low e side to have scalloped the lateral aspect of the neck to some degree. A well played guitar!
This is a special ric, it has just the right amount of wear and is a joy to play. Sounds phenomenal through the ac15.
Anyway, big ups to Grant (what a nice dude too)

That is some mighty fine fretwork there Grant. Did you apply new coat of varnish? If so, what type?

Thanks. Yes, new varnish. Normally I would use nitro, but Ric use varnish. They use a two pot style varnish though, or at least a catalysed one...which I couldn't get hold of. I decided to use standard varnish, one of the aerosol can style ones, but made in USA by one of the niche players. It dries very hard but requires much better prep than nitro and reacts more severely to humidity. The oil content in the spray means it needs a very dry clear day. It's easier to cut into than nitro despite it being hard.

Really is a great guitar.

Yeh, its got oodles of mojo
The nice thing is hes managed to retain a nice 'used' feel on teh side of the fretboard so it matches up with the very worn neck timber.
We had a discussion about the fret board wood. I think it is rosewood, just quite a light/red type.
Anyone forward another opinion on this?

Yes, rosewood fretboard. Rics often have quite pale & more rose-tinted fretboards than other rosewood guitars. My new Fano is like that too:

So do you apply the varnish before refretting, rather than spraying over the frets like a maple board fender? Not brittle enough to chip when pushing the frets in?

Always finish after the fret work is complete - I use very thin tape on each crown to make it easier to polish later. I'll post some action shots tonight.
