Anyone know if you can get wipe-on poly in NZ?
Seems to be available at Bunnings in Australia but not here. Anyone know of anywhere else that might have some?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I don't think so, I think it's a linseed oil based and doesn't harden like a poly.
It looks like wipe on poly is actually just a blend of regular poly and mineral spirits so I can just make my own!

I would use a water based product for finishing a guitar. I have achieved excellent results with wiping it on with a damp cloth. You will need about 6 to 10 coats as each 'wipe' only leaves a very thin layer of finish.
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I already have some oil based stain on there, I'm just really struggling to get a good finish without having to sand most of it back off again!

Tru oil does harden, it's an oil and varnish mix

You're partly right. It's a blend of Linseed and natural oils but it does dry hard. I finished a neck and body in Tru Oil in 2010. It's still the best feeling neck I own. Smooth, fast, never needing to be sanded or polished and still as good as the day it dried.Hollowpoint wrote:I don't think so, I think it's a linseed oil based and doesn't harden like a poly.
The body has worn a but more but that will be caused by fewer coats applied as an afterthought over Danish oil. (Not ideal).
Can't speak too highly of Tru Oil; amazing product.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Agree with what you say, from what I've read on-line, you can just use normal poly and cut it 50/50 with the right solvent/thinner. Was thinking of giving it a crack with some cabots or other poly from bunnings. You just need to apply more coats.
Or there's tru-oil, which as the other say, is excellent.

Ah, I'd wish I'd known about tru-oil before I started! Thanks for the advice!

When you say poly I'm imagining it would be like a two pot thing as in fibreglass resin. Rather than a polyurethane which would relic easy but so pretty.

Nah, I was talking about polyurethane. I was just having issue with getting it on smoothly out of the tin and flaking when sanding.

Try Benjamin Moore paints in Glenfield.
I picked up 4 tins of wipe on poly, $5 per 1l tin. I should have picked up a lot lot more, it's great stuff.

Damn, that sounds great, unfortunately I already finished my job but it's a great tip for anyone else!
