Budget/Mid Priced PA system Recommendations

Post by Dano_NZ »

I hope this is an OK place to post this request?

I've recently been jamming/playing out with a bunch of other mid to late 40's gentlemen in the neighbourhood. We're starting to get a few more regular gigs and are in the market for a PA. It seems things have changed a bit in the last 20 years, active speakers etc. What do you good people recommend? We're all electrified acoustic (4 instruments) and 4 vocals. Playing in the local suburban pubs to local punters (and our friends and family) so nothing too loud.

Thanks in advance
Dano

Behringer x16 digital mixer controlled from an ipad or laptop with 2x (pro level) powered speakers. EV, Yamaha, JBL, Mackie, QSC are good brands.

Line 6 stage source stuff seems pretty good bang for your buck, but I'm no expert...

Behringer get a bad rep but I have nothing but good to say about their products. I have a pair of Truth 3030A studio monitors that are awesome and trustworthy. I have two Behringer 815NEOs. They've survived hundreds of gigs over the years. Use them for small intimate restaurants, large halls, small and large outdoor gigs and everything in between. Add a couple of subs and there's more than enough oomph playing to 2000+ people outdoors. Never really have to turn them past halfway either. That's vocals, guitar, keys, bass and electric drums running through it. Might be overkill if you're not playing full band stuff though.

I was with you, up to the 2000+ people outdoors!
Behringer gear is cheap crap - but mostly it's functional cheap crap which gets the job done. Not gracefully, or with excellence, but it gets there. Still, I wouldn't go there.

A budget powered PA speaker that I've used and thought was OK is the Proel Flash.

I've been intensely happy with our line 6 rig, comprising 2 towers, 2 subs and the m20d mixer. But by fuck it was a lot of dough to buy!
