I could not get the Siamese Dream muff sound: I can run a muff through a 1959 plexi and couldn't get anything except feedback.

There was a lot going on on Siamese Dream, I found this thread on gearslutz ages ago where Butch Vig himself comments on the recording process, fantastic reading and may explain why you weren't getting much success with your emulation.
